The Less Commonly Taught Languages Program expands the range of language and cultural opportunities available to the students at SDSU and members of the San Diego community. Instruction in the Less Commonly Taught Languages is offered through different departments; however the Language Acquisition Resource Center (LARC) has been especially active in the field by initiating different programs and projects.

The Language Resource Centers (LRC) were established by Congress in 1989. Their purpose is to improve the teaching and learning of foreign and second languages in the United States. LARC, one of the very first LRC center was created in 1990 and under the direction of Dr. Mary Ann Lyman- Hager, LCTL received the much needed attention. Dr. Lyman Hager continues to serve as Director for the center. LARC’s mission is to develop and support the teaching and learning of foreign languages in the United States through research, technology, and publications. Particular attention is paid to less commonly taught languages, cross-cultural issues, language skills assessment, and teacher training.

Currently, the language lab at LARC offers intensive courses in Persian and Arabic from elementary to Distinguished level and supports courses in Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese Mixtec. Language pages can be access by students.
